Principal Solar Institute’s “Lifetime Energy Production™ – A Simple Method for PV Module Comparison,” Chosen as One of Best Posters of PV America, June 23-25, 2014
Matthew A. Thompson, Ph.D., executive director, will present: Solar Central Booth #245, Tuesday, June 24, 2014, 3:10 p.m., Boston Convention and Exhibition Center

Dallas, TX –June 10, 2014 – The Principal Solar Institute, an online reference center and resource guide for commercial and utility scale solar markets, announces that industry experts have chosen “Lifetime Energy Production™ – A Simple Method for PV Module Comparison,” as one of the Best Posters of PV America 2014. Matthew A. Thompson, Ph.D., executive director, Principal Solar Institute, will present at Solar Central Booth#245, Boston Convention and Exhibition Center, Boston, Massachusetts, 3:10 p.m., June 24, 2014. The PV Module Rating provides a quick and simple method for side-by-side comparison of photovoltaic (PV) modules to maximize return-on-investment and enhance the value of a solar project.

“Our PV Module Rating is based on expected energy production which is in stark contrast to  the traditional dollars-per-watt benchmark that is based on power and is most often used for initial project finance decisions. In the long run, it is energy production that generates revenue, not power,” says Thompson. “This important distinction must become a part of every due diligence analysis for investors, developers, installers and owners of PV solar projects. The PV Module Rating is calculated based on published characteristics of PV modules, and realistic cycles of sunlight and temperature. This provides for an unbiased metric because no module cost information is used.”

Stakeholders can employ the PV Module Rating directly in a cost-benefit analysis of modules based on energy yield rather than on theoretical maximum power.

“The PV Module Rating has been used by renewable energy investors in their utility scale solar due diligence process, and by Solarize Frederick County as a mechanism to document installers’ choice of solar system components,” Thompson adds.

Principal Solar High-Value Acquisition Strategy: Offers Solar Owners and Developers Exceptional Upside, Easier Transactions with Complete Capital Structure: Developers of shovel-ready or operating solar utility projects align with PSI

Dallas, TX – April 22, 2014Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company executing a unique roll-up strategy to create The World's First Distributed Solar Utility™, announces that it has the resources and intent to purchase and finance multiple solar projects. As the key piece in its strategy to build a large-scale, geographically distributed solar utility, Principal Solar is aggressively looking to buy operating projects and finance shovel ready projects.

“A growing number of brokers and investors are moving into the solar space, a trend which is validating our strategy,” says Dan Bedell, executive vice president of Corporate and Strategic Development, PSI.  “We have a unique value proposition:  we are a long-term, owner/operator partner – a perfect complement to developers – not merely a short-term investor.  We can deliver the full capital stack, not simply the debt or equity component of the financing structure. Our deep power industry experience and intent to partner with our developers on future projects means we offer more strategic value, financial upside and easier transactions.”

Michael Martin, executive vice president, Business Development, PSI adds, “We want the solar community to know that we can be its one-stop shop and a repeat business partner if they’ve got shovel-ready or operating projects.  Typically, the builder from whom we purchase projects will have the opportunity to also own a piece of Principal Solar.   We’re building something different—a publicly traded, pure-play solar utility. I would encourage owners of large scale commercial distributed generation projects and utility projects, and developers of shovel-ready utility projects, to contact our business development team: dan.bedell@principalsolar.com and michael.martin@principalsolar.com.”

Principal Solar Institute Marks First Anniversary: Launches Manufacturer Ratings Table to Augment Unbiased, Comprehensive Solar Module Rating System

Dallas, TX – February 26, 2014 – The Principal Solar Institute, an online reference center and resource guide for commercial and utility scale solar markets, acknowledges the growing influence of its PV Module Rating one year after introduction, expands its database in response to requests by thousands of visitors, and launches a new Manufacturer Ratings Table.

“It’s gratifying to see the progress we’ve made with the PSI Ratings in such a short time,” says Matthew A. Thompson, Ph.D., executive director, Principal Solar Institute. “As the first-of-its kind approach allowing easy, unbiased, comprehensive analysis and comparison of photovoltaic (PV) modules, PSI Ratings elevate the solar industry by allowing solar consumers to compare the critical characteristics of PV modules between different manufacturers and across product lines.”

Solarize Frederick Countya special pilot project of the Renewable Star Challenge to increase solar electric and solar hot water system installations in Frederick County, MD, cited the PSI Ratings as an example of their requirements for installer’s bids.

The PSI Ratings take a rigorous approach similar to the financial sector which turns to Standard and Poor’s Ratings for investments, and the air conditioning industry which relies upon SEER Ratings, to help consumers identify the best products for their needs.

After numerous inquiries about ratings of PV modules from manufacturers that were not among the top 500 PV modules, the Institute added a Web page that shows all of the 398 PV module manufacturers in the PSI database, the number of rated modules for each manufacturer and the PSI Rating range for each manufacturer.

In another significant update, website visitors can now “Compare PV Modules by Manufacturer,” in addition to “Compare and Analyze PV Modules” on the original Web page.

Dr. Thompson adds, “With other firms' projections showing that solar projects could produce power at costs significantly lower than nuclear, coal or natural gas by 2020, there’s never been a more important time for the solar power industry to have a method to uniformly evaluate PV modules and manufacturers in order to make technologically and financially optimal decisions.”

Principal Solar Institute Webinar: Retired Brig. Gen. Becky Halstead Discusses Effective Strategies for Leaders in Every Sector of the Energy Market

Leading Change in the Energy Industry

Michael GortonDallas, TX – January 31, 2014 – The Principal Solar Institute, an online reference center and resource guide for the commercial and utility scale solar market, will host the Webinar “Leading Change in the Energy Industry,” Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. EST. Presented by retired Brig. Gen. Becky Halstead, the first female Commanding General in U.S. military history to lead at the strategic level in combat and author of “24/7: The First Person You Must Lead is YOU,” the Webinar discusses how energy industry leaders can learn key strategies to help forge a path toward a stronger, more sustainable future.

“Effective energy leaders must be open to change in order to drive it, develop consensus among disparate groups and build bridges across every sector,” says Halstead, who is an advisor to Principal Solar, Inc. (OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company executing a unique roll-up strategy to create The World's First Distributed Solar Utility TM.  “Just as portfolio diversification is critical for risk-averse investors, diversification is essential for the nation’s energy mix. This holds true for industry and corporate teams. A diverse team, offering varied ideas that can be shaped toward one goal, is a stronger and more effective force for successfully navigating uncertain terrain.”

Halstead discusses how the energy industry is transitioning to a more sustainable model in which solar -- a viable, renewable energy source that complements natural gas and other energy sources -- has become an attractive option for traditional energy stakeholders.

Halstead adds, “Energy leaders who can lead the adoption of solar as a ‘power partner’ for generating cost-effective peak generation energy will play an important role in the interest of the entire energy community.”

Principal Solar Releases White Paper Comparing Role of Concentrated Solar Thermal and Photovoltaic Solar Technologies in Power Generation Marketplace

Dallas, TX –December 20, 2012Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company executing a unique roll-up strategy to create the world's first distributed solar utility, today announced the release of “Technological Niches: Concentrated Solar Thermal vs. Photovoltaic Solar.” Authored by Brett T. Gage, research associate PSI, and Rick Borry, Ph.D., chief technology officer, PSI, the paper compares concentrated solar thermal (CST) and photovoltaic (PV) solar technologies, exploring how each succeeds or fails in relation to the electric power generation marketplace.

“Solar electricity will be cost-competitive without subsidies within three years,” says Michael Gorton, CEO, PSI. “This paper explains the strengths and weaknesses of CST and PV technology at a time when both are approaching grid-parity power prices in many applications, making this a timely and highly relevant topic.”

The paper discusses the evolution of solar technology and demonstrates how CST and PV solar technology each serve different technological niches. As of 2012, PV has come to dominate all smaller-scale solar electricity applications, while retaining the majority market share even in commercial and utility-scale applications.

Recently, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced $20 million in new funding that will help integrate concentrating solar power (CSP) systems with fossil fuel power plants. These hybrid systems leverage the infrastructure of fossil fuel plants such as turbine and transmission systems, helping to reduce the cost of solar-generated electricity and bring CSP plants online quicker. CSP retains a strong niche at the utility-scale and in combined heat and power applications, where no amount of PV cost-reduction is expected to overcome its inherent technology advantages.

“As energy independence and sustainability are becoming formidable issues in the public eye, solar presents itself as a primary solution and can increase its future market share simply by participating in the growth of capacity -- rather than serving as a replacement,” says Dr. Borry. “PV and CST complement each other to meet new demands, and both will increase their share of the electric power market as the world adds new capacity outside of the traditional carbon combustion processes.”

The Principal Solar Institute Publishes White Paper Outlining Industry’s First and Only Independent Ratings System for Creating, Testing, Monitoring Solar PV Modules

Dallas, TX – November 13, 2012Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company executing a unique roll-up strategy to create the world's first distributed solar utility, today announced the release of “Solar Industry Goes Mainstream: New PV Module Rating System Empowers Solar Professionals,” authored by Ken Allen, Rick Borry, Dan Bedell, Kirk Blankenship and Matthew A. Thompson, director of The Principal Solar Institute, an online reference center and resource guide for the commercial and utility scale solar market.  The paper outlines the industry’s first and only comprehensive, independent performance rating standard based on lifetime energy production of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, which is designed to assist large-scale solar consumers.

“Solar PV modules offer a vast array of technology choices in terms of cells, panels and configurations, creating challenges for decision-makers,” says Thompson. “This unbiased rating system elevates the solar industry to the level of other mature markets, such as the financial sector, which turns to Standard and Poor’s Ratings for investments, and the air conditioning manufacturing industry, which relies upon SEER Ratings.”

Guided by an advisory board of highly influential academic experts and solar professionals, the PSI PV Module Rating is based on physical tests by independent laboratories such as TÜV Rheinland, but is presented as a single comparative number that can be used with circumstantial information such as deliverability, pricing and manufacturer reputation so that solar power plant designers, buyers and financiers have a consistent basis for choosing a particular PV module. The system empowers these decision-makers to make informed, intelligent comparisons and determinations when selecting PV modules.

“The PSI Rating method will satisfy the solar power industry’s urgent need for a way to uniformly evaluate PV modules in order to make technologically and financially optimal decisions,” Thompson adds.

Principal Solar Institute Launches Industry’s First Comprehensive Solar PV Module Rating System: Creates Standards, Elevates Industry

Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company, backs educational organization dedicated to solar industry

Dallas, TX – October 1, 2012 –The Principal Solar Institute, an online reference center and resource guide for the commercial and utility scale solar market, today announced the introduction of the PSI PV Module Rating, the first-of-its kind approach that allows easy, unbiased, comprehensive analysis and comparison of photovoltaic (PV) modules. PSI Ratings are designed to allow solar consumers to make informed, intelligent comparisons and decisions when selecting PV modules.

The Principal Solar Institute Advisory Board consists of these highly influential academic and industry experts:

  • Govindasamy (Mani) TamizhMani, Ph.D., President, TUV Rheinland PTL (Photovoltaic Testing Laboratory), involved in R&D activities related to photovoltaics and fuel cells for over 25 years, and PV module testing and certification activities for over 13 years.
  • Robert Birkmire, Ph.D. (Physics), Director, Institute of Energy Conversion (IEC), University of Delaware, Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Department of Physics, University of Delaware, principal investigator on numerous government and industrial contracts on amorphous and polycrystalline thin film solar cells.
  • Robert P. H. Chang, Ph.D. (Astrophysics), Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Northwestern University, recognized innovator in materials research, interdisciplinary science education and international networking.
  • David Williams, Chief Executive Officer of solar developer dissigno, peer reviewer for the US Department of Energy's SunShot program and lead for National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Quality Assurance Communication task force.

“Until now, there was no accepted standard for comparing the critical characteristics of PV modules between different manufacturers, or even across a single product line,” says Matthew A. Thompson, Ph.D., executive director of the Principal Solar Institute.  “The PSI Ratings elevate the solar industry in a rigorous approach similar to the financial sector, which turns to Standard and Poor’s Ratings for investments, and the air conditioning industry, which relies upon SEER Ratings.  We are closing the gap in the solar power industry’s urgent need for a method to uniformly evaluate PV modules in order to make technologically and financially optimal decisions.”

PV modules produce electrical power under a wide range of environmental conditions, such as irradiance, nominal operating cell temperature and ambient conditions causing the electrical power output to differ between modules of the same nameplate wattage. The PSI PV Module Rating is a comparative number that can be used with pricing information, providing power plant designers and buyers with a consistent basis for choosing a particular PV module.

“Significantly, this method goes beyond simply tabulating results provided by the manufacturers in their specification sheets,” adds Dr. Thompson.

Michael Gorton, CEO and chairman of Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), explains, “No industry can be considered mature until it has adopted standards. As tireless, passionate promoters of solar as a near-term solution to so many energy-related issues, the Principal Solar Institute is committed to driving solar energy to the forefront of the national energy debate. These standards will help to build the solar industry’s solid foundation of credibility in the minds of energy leaders, investors and industries around the world.”

Principal Solar Advisory Board Member Peter Lynch Releases White Paper Supporting Feed-in Tariffs

SOLAR NOVUS TODAYDallas, TX – October 1, 2012Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company executing a unique roll-up strategy to create the world's first distributed solar utility, today announced the release of “Feed-in Tariffs: The Proven Road Not Taken…Why Not?”. Authored by PSI advisory board member J. Peter Lynch, the paper examines how feed-in tariffs (FIT) can accelerate investment in renewable energy, with FITs providing a guarantee that anyone who generates electricity from a renewable energy source can receive long-term payments for each kilowatt-hour produced.

“A FIT program is the most effective way to spark rapid development of the massive amount of renewable energy potential in the US,” says Lynch, a pioneer in the renewable energy sector of the investment banking industry. “A FIT removes investor uncertainty by ensuring that anyone with access to sun or wind can receive funding for a set period of time.”

Lynch will host a Webinar, “Why Not? The Case for an American Feed-In Tariff,” for The Principal Solar Institute on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from 12:00 p.m.-12:45 p.m. ET.

Investments in Solar Energy Generate New Confidence: Principal Solar Releases Guidance, “Investing in the Power of the Sun: The Capitalist
Case for Solar Energy”

Dallas, TX – September 10, 2012Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded solar energy holding company executing a unique roll-up strategy to create the world's first distributed solar utility, today announced the release of its White Paper, “Investing in the Power of the Sun: The Capitalist Case for Solar Energy.” Authored by Michael Gorton, chief executive officer and chairman of PSI, and Dan Bedell, executive vice president of PSI, the paper outlines the U.S. solar energy industry’s trajectory toward grid parity, offers the financial community a solid rationale for investing in solar as a “power partner” for generating cost-effective, peak generation energy, and documents the solar industry’s strength even without government subsidies.

“A solid capitalist foundation will be the primary factor driving the coming ‘gold rush’ in solar development, and now is the time for traditional conservative thinking to re-examine the facts about solar energy, explore its potential for delivering more efficient and less costly power, and concurrently create jobs and opportunities that trigger economic growth,” says Gorton. “This trigger would be possible because electricity drives almost every part of the economy, and cheap abundant electricity helps keep industry competitive.”

The paper examines the recent past and potential future of photovoltaic (PV) solar in terms of how it has compared with traditional generation and how, even without government subsidies, solar utility scale projects will reach a price per kWh that will be at -- or less than -- traditional generation, possibly as soon as 2014. By utilizing a recent MIT study to make projections, the paper demonstrates that by 2020, solar projects could produce power significantly lower than the nuclear, coal or natural gas.

“With continued advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale and sophistication, the cost of PV will continue to decline steadily resulting in competitive electricity in a growing number of regions,” Gorton adds, “The continued, annual drops in the cost of solar will not only result in competitive electricity, but in cheaper electricity coupled with higher profit margins for the industry.”

“The market could be allowed to operate as designed, with no caps, or sufficiently high caps,” says Seidel. “Another solution involves a capacity market that operates to ensure that sufficient generating capacity is available to meet peak loads.”

As a long-term solution, the impact of a shift from traditional to solar power on the Texas economy could be significant.

Seidel adds, “Currently, without a capacity component in the market, there is not sufficient financial incentiveto encourage building new power plants.”

Principal Solar Releases White Paper, "Navigating by the Sun: U.S. Department of Defense Takes Aggressive Lead as Early Adopters of Solar Energy"

Department of Defense solar energy initiatives poised to significantly influence national security, health of the U.S. economy and wide-spread consumer adoption of solar energy technologies

SOLAR NOVUS TODAYDallas, TX – April 24, 2012Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a publicly traded renewable energy holding company rapidly advancing the inevitable, worldwide utilization of solar energy through a unique roll-up strategy, today announced the release of its White Paper, "Navigating by the Sun: U.S. Department of Defense Takes Aggressive Lead as Early Adopters of Solar Energy." Authored by Michael Gorton, chief executive officer and chairman of PSI, and Rebecca "Becky" Halstead, Brigadier General (retired), the paper explores the leadership role the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) is playing as early adopters of solar energy technologies.

"Driven by climate change and the need for energy security, the DoD’s solar energy plans are designed to strategically maximize effectiveness during military, disaster relief and humanitarian engagements," says Gorton. "As initiatives unfold, the DoD is serving as a huge laboratory, laying the groundwork for widespread adoption of new ideas for optimizing efficiency and creating zero-energy environments in which users consume only as much energy as they generate."

Efficiencies gained from a greater reliance on solar energy have the potential to create energy independence, shrink risks for military personnel in the field, reduce the DoD’s carbon footprint and drive clean energy innovation for the entire nation.

"As the DoD’s large-scale mission unfolds, it will have a direct influence on national security and the health of the U.S. economy, with strategies shaped around overcoming the challenges of energy usage and strategic vulnerability," adds Halstead.

Principal Solar, Inc. (PSWW) Announces
Public Trading of Its Common Stock

Dallas, TX – May 25, 2011 – Principal Solar, Inc (PSI; OTC Pink: PSWW), a renewable energy holding company which concentrates its resources on rapidly advancing the inevitable, worldwide utilization of solar energy through a unique roll-up strategy, today announced the public trading of its common stock.  The Company is quoted on the Over-The-Counter (OTC) Electronic Pink Sheets (NQB) under the symbol PSWWD.pk, which transitions to PSWW on June 23, 2011.

"By acquiring best-in-class solar companies, PSI will establish itself as the world's leading provider of solar energy -- the most promising, price-competitive, and abundant clean energy source for the future," says Michael Gorton, chief executive officer and chairman of PSI, noting that in the near term the cost of photovoltaic (PV) solar power will compete with and actually be lower than traditional sources of energy created by fossil fuels.  "Timing for this launch is ideal, given the nod on solar energy from Capitol Hill, the accelerating solar market and the vote of confidence from front-line investors.  Solar stocks are poised to dramatically escalate in 2011, attracting attention from growth and value investors, especially as broad energy prices rise."

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), U.S. installations increased 67 percent to $6 billion in market value last year. PV installations also grew 102 percent to reach 878 megawatts for grid connections while tripling for utilities to 242 megawatts.

PSI is undertaking multiple acquisitions of solar companies that are well-positioned for growth based upon their geography, size, revenue, market footprint, and corporate leadership.

Robert Shuey, principal, Pegasus Funds, a Dallas-based merchant banking firm says, "We are confident in the experienced leadership team of PSI to execute a strong business roll-up strategy that drives investor value. We expect that PSI will also deliver significant social and economic value as solar power brings practical solutions to communities, governments, and individuals worldwide."
